Chongoni Ancient Rock Art Paintings

Dedza district has a very large number of caves with paintings going back over 10,000 years to the late Stone age and more recent as 1945. The area has recently been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Department of Culture is gradually opening up the caves for viewing and Dedza pottery Tour Guides have been given training in the history of the Rock Art. We normally take guests to the following 2 sites:-

Mphunzi Site – about 30 minutes from the pottery drive on reasonable roads and guests can be driven all the way to the site. There are several places at the site with Rock art so the trip takes 2 – 3 hours.

Nanzeze site – the site is the same distance from the pottery as Mphunzi but due to the poor roads it can take up to an hour in the vehicle. There is then a 15 – 30 minutes’ walk in a beautiful setting up a reasonably steep but good path to the cave. The cave has wonderful views overlooking the foothills of Dedza Mountain. The trip takes about 4 hours
